New York Times says fashion illustration making a comeback (sort of)
In an article by Ruth LaFerla called "What s Lens Can't Capture," there is a quote from Robert A. Richards that says "Illustration is suddenly blossoming a little." Richards is the curator of "The Line of Fashion," an exhibition of fashion drawings last spring at the Society of Illustrators in Manhatten.
The main point of the article is that fashion illustrations can project a certain energy and style that may not be captured in a photograph. Laird Borrelli, the author of "Fashion Illustration by Fashion Designers" adds that "...an illustrator can capture its poetry, document its mood or energy - those are subtle things that evoke something more than mere attendance."
Several popular fashion illustrators are mentioned in the article. Blue Logan, whose playing card illustrations have been widely coveted is appearing this week at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach. There is also a picture of Danny Roberts' popular drawing of the "Chanel Girls." Also mentioned are Laura Laine, a Finnish illustrator and Richard Haynes, who illustrates for In Style magazine and J. Crew.

My drawings of Westwood's Spring 2010 collection
Vivienne Westwood has been one of my favorite designers for a while now, and I posted photos from this show a couple of weeks ago in this blog. I loved the show because the colors were really bright and many of the fabrics appeared to be hand-painted. I thought the whole show was very artistic and I've had an interest in making some drawings from it ever since i made that first posting. I finally got around to it this past weekend.

Nylon Magazine's November 2009 issue
I really enjoyed this magazine. Called The American Issue" it features actress Blake lively on the cover wearing a black rock and roll jacket with fringeon the sleeves. In addition to gret articles about women in art, music, TV, film and fashion, there are lots of collages and hand-drawn illustrations. It gives the magazine a fresh original look that I can really appreciate. I was inspired by the style of the magazine to make these pictures, based on a couple of photo shoots from the magazine.

Dear Creatures has cool art for Autumn 2009 Collection
Follow my blog with bloglovin
My thanks for Rebecca, the Clothes Horse at http://www.theclothes.blogspot.com/
for showing some examples of the latest photos from Dear Creatures at http://www.dearcreatures.com/
of their Autumn 2009 collection.
I think it would be really fun to create some of my own art using this technique of combining a photo with a fun drawing in the background. I'm afraid I'm going to have to break down and buy a new camera, though.

Lexus Ad with Isabel and Ruben Toledo
In the latest issue of Vogue, there is a new advertisement from the Lexus "Something Better" campaign and features drawings by Ruben and Isabel Toledo. Ruben, an artist, and Isabel, a fashion designer, also happen to be a married couple. The ad is intended to show how Lexus delivers the "possibilities of tomorrow," and reveals that "the car of the future is now a reality." Isabel and Ruben were asked to create their own idea of what "someday" would look like in their field.
Ruben's fashion illustrations have appeared in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Details, Paper and the New York Times. He has also written and illustrated several books. Born in Cuba in 1961, Ruben's illustrations have been described as "surreal and witty."

Latest fashion sketches by me (Liz Blair)
I drew these in the last couple of days. Some are from Nylon Magazine and the others are from the Spanish Vogue, March 2008. These drawings were first sketched in pencil, and then I used prismacolor art markers for the rest. These markers are expensive, but they give a professional look.
