Nylon Magazine's November 2009 issue

art by Liz Blair

I really enjoyed this magazine. Called The American Issue" it features actress Blake lively on the cover wearing a black rock and roll jacket with fringeon the sleeves. In addition to gret articles about women in art, music, TV, film and fashion, there are lots of collages and hand-drawn illustrations. It gives the magazine a fresh original look that I can really appreciate. I was inspired by the style of the magazine to make these pictures, based on a couple of photo shoots from the magazine.

Book about Andy Warhol's Fashion Illustration

(This description is from the Fashion Illustration Gallery website)

Andy Warhol Fashion, Foreword by Simon Doonan
Before he found fame as the father of Pop Art, Warhol made fashion illustrations on his kitchen table for New York's fashion tastemakers such as Neiman Marcus, I. Miller, Glamour, Mademoiselle and Harper’s Bazaar.
Thames & Hudson have collected together Andy Warhol’s delicately beautiful, colourfully playful and hugely influential fashion illustration work and put them in this brilliant little book.
A pop object in itself, Andy Warhol Fashion is a fun and gorgeous gallery of his most delightful images. These witty drawings – fanciful shoes, chic hats, smart suits and perfect accessories to match – showcase his unique ability to find inspiration in the everyday and elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary.
Sprinkled with Warhol’s perceptively funny observations – ‘When you think of it, department stores are kind of like museums’ – Andy Warhol, the book contains are insightful foreword by Simon Doonan, the internationally acclaimed window dresser.
Paperback, 256 pages, 250 colour illustrations.

Fake Interview with "Andy Warhol's Ghost"

Liz: Andy, thanks for meeting with me today. How are you doing?
Andy: Good.
Liz: I am really excited and honored to meet you! I would like to ask you some questions about fashion and fashion illustration.
Andy: OK
Liz: Recently, on your 80th birthdqay, Marc Jacobs played you in a photo shoot for Interview magazine (June/July 2008, www.interviewmagazine.com/fashion/marc-jacobs/)
How do you feel about the choice of Marc Jacobs to portray you.
Andy: Oh, I was really flattered that they chose Marc. He's one of the most consistently innovative and successful fashion designers today. I always used to say that the best art is business art, and Marc Jacobs has certainly fit that description.
Liz: What do you mean?
Andy: I mean that there's nothing wrong with an artist embracing corporate techniques to market their work.
Liz: Some people even thought that Marc looked a little like you in the photos.
Andy: Um...Do you think so?
Liz: Actually, I think they tried to make the photos more inspired by your style than trying to do a perfect impersonation. It probably became a lot more interesting that way.
Andy: Really? I suppose that's right.
Liz: Who are some of your favorite fashion illusrators?
Andy: Oh, I love David Downton, Ruben Toledo, Sara Singh, and, oh, Megan Hess.
Liz: You did some wonderful fashion illustrations in the early days of your career. Which ones were your favorites?
Andy: Oh, I've always liked the shoe drawings the best.
Liz: Did you know that the Carnegie Museum is now called the Warhol Museum, and is the largest museum dedicated to a single American artist?
Andy: No
Liz: Thanks, Andy. It's been great talking to you today.

My drawing of Susie Bubble

fashion illustration of Susie Bubble by Liz Blair Here's my drawing of Susie Bubble, based on a photo from her website ( susiebubble.typepad.com). If you don't know Susie, you should visit her world famous blog. I would like to be her "when I grow up." Most of the time she lives in London, England, where she has access to all sorts of exciting designers, stores and fashion shoes. She seems to travel the world wearing beautiful clothes, shopping and meeting interesting people. She is becoming somewhat of a clothing icon herself, being photographed at fashion events by blogging photographers.

Me in my belly dancing costume

Here's me (on the left) with my beautiful belly dancing teacher. Belly dancing class is the highlight of my week, and one of my favorite parts is dressing up in costumes. I have only been belly dancing for about 6 months, but I love it! I've never really performed for anyone yet, but maybe one of these days I'll decide to give it a try.

Dear Creatures has cool art for Autumn 2009 Collection

Follow my blog with bloglovin

My thanks for Rebecca, the Clothes Horse at http://www.theclothes.blogspot.com/
for showing some examples of the latest photos from Dear Creatures at http://www.dearcreatures.com/
of their Autumn 2009 collection.
I think it would be really fun to create some of my own art using this technique of combining a photo with a fun drawing in the background. I'm afraid I'm going to have to break down and buy a new camera, though.

Lexus Ad with Isabel and Ruben Toledo

In the latest issue of Vogue, there is a new advertisement from the Lexus "Something Better" campaign and features drawings by Ruben and Isabel Toledo. Ruben, an artist, and Isabel, a fashion designer, also happen to be a married couple. The ad is intended to show how Lexus delivers the "possibilities of tomorrow," and reveals that "the car of the future is now a reality." Isabel and Ruben were asked to create their own idea of what "someday" would look like in their field.
Ruben's fashion illustrations have appeared in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Details, Paper and the New York Times. He has also written and illustrated several books. Born in Cuba in 1961, Ruben's illustrations have been described as "surreal and witty."
